LOWER ELWHA KLALLAM TRIBE CEREMONY AT PORT ANGELES
WSDOT officials today announced that arrangements had been completed for the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe to conduct a ceremony at the Hood Canal Bridge pontoon and anchor construction site in Port Angeles on Saturday, January 15, 2004. Construction at the site recently was terminated because of difficulties presented by a larger number of unexpected tribal ancestral burials discovered during the project. The site was purchased by WSDOT for the construction project in 2003 from the Port of Port Angeles. The ceremony will involve workers, including members of the Tribe, who participated in archaeological and other construction activities at the site, including the removal of burial remains. Secretary of Transportation Doug MacDonald and other WSDOT officials have been invited. Mr. MacDonald also expects to visit with officials at the Port of Port Angeles and the City of Port Angeles during the course of the day.
TEMPORARY SR 104 HOOD CANAL BRIDGE CLOSURES NEXT WEEK
Routine maintenance inspections of the east-half draw span will require intermittent closures the SR 104 Hood Canal Bridge to vehicle traffic on Thursday, Jan. 20. During closures of up to 30-minutes, engineers will inspect the condition of the guide wheels that are part of the east half draw span. The closures will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. For more information on the maintenance inspections, please contact Joyce Komac, maintenance superintendent, at (360) 874-3050.
NEXT STEPS FOR PONTOON AND ANCHOR CONSTRUCTION
WSDOT officials are pursuing options for re-starting construction of pontoons and anchors to be used to replace the bridge's east half. On Jan. 10, 18 sites were submitted to WSDOT for possible pontoon and anchor construction sites. The bridge project design team will evaluate each submittal, gather additional site information, and summarize characteristics of each proposal. WSDOT may select one of those sites or it may rely on a contractor to select a site and build the pontoons and anchors.
Those site proposals represented nine counties and a mix of private companies and local municipalities. Here is a brief list:
