SR 104 - Hood Canal Bridge - Temporary Alternate Driving Route Improvements and Traffic Control

State highway locations that will experience increased congestion during the bridge closure have been identified.  Solutions were created in order to get drivers to their destination on time; provide them with the fastest routes;   help them avoid being stuck in traffic; and, make travel easier.

  1. Make temporary improvements to state highway locations that will experience increased traffic during the bridge closure.
  2. Implement the incident management plan, including use of Incident Response Trucks, maintenance trucks, Washington State Patrol patrols, signage at key decision points, highway advisory radio, variable message signs and radio alerts to assist drivers.

TEMPORARY ALTERNATE DRIVING ROUTE IMPROVEMENTS AND TRAFFIC CONTROL

SR 104 / Pacific Ave (labeled T1 on map at left): Provide necessary traffic control measures to clearly mark the route to the Port Gamble park and ride.

SR 3 / Sam Christopherson Road (labeled T2 on map at left and seen below): Provide necessary traffic control measures to keep traffic moving through this intersection.

SR 104 / Shine Pit Access (labeled T3 on map at left): Provide necessary traffic control measures to clearly mark the route to the Shine Pit park and ride.

US 101 / SR 119 Hoodsport, Lake Cushman Road (labeled T4 on map at left and seen below): Provide necessary traffic control measures to allow drivers to access SR 119.

WSDOT operations crews will continually monitor the alternate driving routes and make adjustments to the traffic control measures as needed to help keep traffic moving.

INCIDENT MANAGEMENT PLAN (IMP)
An Incident Management Plan was developed to coordinate the needs and responsibilities of WSDOT Incident Response Team (IRT), WSDOT Maintenance, and Washington State Patrol (WSP) for the two closures that took place during 2005. This also included the installation and operation of, signage, Variable Message Sign (VMS), and Highway Advisory Radio (HAR). A modified version of this plan will be used during the six week closure.
