Overview
In 2009, WSDOT replaced the east half of the Hood Canal Bridge, which was nearing the end of its structural service life. WSDOT retrofit the west half hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems so they match the new east half.
Traveler News: WSDOT is addressing the concerns of residents who live near the Hood Canal Bridge and cannot access or depart their driveways during congestion caused by bridge openings. WSDOT has designated 36 "Do not block" zones on northbound SR 3 and posted six signs to inform motorists of these driveways. See photos of these zones.

Wider lanes and safety shoulders help keep the 15,000-20,000 vehicles that cross the bridge daily moving smoothly. Upgraded mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems translate into more reliable bridge openings.

WSDOT thanks the residents and businesses of the Olympic and Kitsap peninsulas for their patience and support during the east-half construction and retrofit.
The project required a number a bridge closures, including a five-week closure in May-June 2009.
Once the bridge was reopened June 3, 2009, dozens of additional openings occcured as extensive testing and retrofit work continued. All bridge inspections concluded in May 2010.
