Centerline rumble strips are cut into the existing pavement. Vibrations alert drivers when they are crossing over into the opposing lane.

Status

November 2009

  • Crews began installing rumble strips in northwest Washington and eastern Washington this summer. Crews have completed work on the northwest Washington contract.
  • This project is fully funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
  • WSDOT maintains a statewide priority list based on collision history to identify locations where rumble strips could improve safety. The ARRA stimulus funding allows WSDOT to address the high priority locations now.

In February 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. WSDOT now stands ready to translate the federal recovery funding into job creation and highway improvements.

Why is WSDOT installing rumble strips?
Centerline rumble strips are a proven low-cost method of dramatically reducing cross-over collisions by alerting inattentive drivers when they are crossing into oncoming traffic.

The End Result
This project will install rumble strips on various two-lane state routes throughout Washington State.

Project Benefits

  • Safety. Reduces cross-over collisions and resulting injuries and fatalities.
  • Jobs. Supports an estimated 30 construction-related jobs.

What is the project timeline?
WSDOT awarded the northwest Washington contract to Apply-A-Line, Inc. on July 20, 2009 and the eastern Washington contract to North Star Enterprises, Inc. on July 27, 2009. Work began in late summer. The northwest Washington contract was completed on Nov. 12, 2009.

The third contract, for work in southwest Washington and the Olympic Peninsula, will be re-advertised to contractors this fall. Work will be scheduled for summer 2010.
