The BNSF Railway Co. (BNSF) owns the railroad bridge over the Skagit River between Mount Vernon and Burlington. During high floods, the bridge piers can catch debris and worsen flooding in the area. Skagit County’s original plans were to replace the entire bridge and state funds were to be spent on preliminary engineering for a replacement structure.
Instead, the county proposed investigating debris management strategies. This study explored various debris management alternatives and examined other debris management practices on bridges of the lower Skagit River.
