Rail - Kelso to Martin's Bluff - 3rd Main Line and Storage Tracks

Project Facts
  • A siding is a track located next to the main line that allows a train to move out of the way of another train, similar to a passing lane on a highway.
  • Freight and passenger train traffic has increased near the ports of Longview and Kalama.
  • An average of 40 trains per day pass through the Kalama area.

Project Status

July 2008

The 2008 Washington State Legislature adjusted the funding schedule for this project. Project construction is now scheduled to begin in the 2013-2015 biennium and be completed by June 30, 2017. The state legislature also instructed WSDOT to complete the necessary environmental documents for this project by June 30, 2009.

Why is WSDOT pursuing the Kelso-Martin's Bluff rail improvements?
The project will keep the main line clear for through-trains by allowing local freight trains to operate off the main line. It will also improve reliability and reduce travel times for passenger trains, and allow for more frequent Amtrak Cascades service.

The End Result
This project will help keep the main line tracks clear of slower moving freight trains near the Port of Kalama.

Project Benefits
The goals of the project are:

  • Improve freight train access and egress at the Port of Kalama
  • Reduce main line congestion
  • Reduce delays to Amtrak Cascades passenger trains

What is the project timeline?
Project planning and environmental documentation will be completed by June 2009. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2014.
