Recent Progress
As reported in September 2004, WSDOT proposes to increase the project funds by $5 million in the 2005-2007 biennium by taking advantage of Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railway's agreement to forgo state funding for the Ballard Double Track and Crossover project. The revised scope will reduce travel times through the area by an amount less than originally hoped but will still provide storage tracks to keep freight switching work off the main line. Design work is continuing under the direction of BNSF.

Design Construction Impacts
Data collection and the early stages of design began in August 2003. The City of Everett has been willing to be involved in the design to ensure other rail improvements that they are planning are accommodated.

|
Environmental Impacts / Compliance
Project may involve filling of wetlands and will require a Shoreline Permit from the City of Everett.
|
Impacts to Traffic
There may be some brief work windows that may effect rail operations for both freight and passenger trains as new track is connected to the current track. Amtrak Cascades passengers may occasionally be moved by motor coach (bus) to allow for these work windows.
