February 2012
- The project is substantially complete with just minor items still needing work.
WSDOT began in 2009 to rehabilitate the freight rail line between the Columbia River and Dayton. The work was planned in two phases.
The first phase improved four public crossings in Dayton, including Bulk Plank Road, Pine Street, Front Street, and Fourth Street. This work was completed in June 2009.
The second phase consisted of rehabilitating two bridges and installing more than 200 new track ties.
Why is WSDOT
rehabilitating the rail line between Wallula and Dayton?
The rail line suffers from years of deferred maintenance which results in excessive wear and tear to the system. Trains end up traveling slower and less frequent through areas that are deteriorated and in need of repair. This most often causes companies to find alternate routes to ship their goods.
The End Result
WSDOT will work with the Ports of Walla Walla and Columbia to rehabilitate portions of the rail line to ensure a viable railroad system able to serve Washington shippers for years to come.
Project Benefits
- Continuation of rail service to businesses in Walla Walla and Columbia Counties.
- Lower transportation costs for local shippers.
- Minimize wear and tear on state highways by providing an alternative to truck transportation.
