Project Facts
- WSDOT saved the 21-mile rail line from abandonment in 1994 and helped to construct rail sidings on the line in 2002.
- Upgrades will accommodate increased traffic from two Yakama Nation sawmills, which provide 250 local jobs.
- Since 1994, carloads on the line have risen from 30 per year to over 1,500.
July 2008
WSDOT met with Yakima County in January 2008 and decided to revert back to the original 2005 grant agreement which upgrades a portion of the Toppenish Simcoe and Western Rail Line between Wesley Junction (MP 0.00) and Town of Harrah (MP 9.6). Construction started in June 2008. Project completion is planned for August 2008.
Why is WSDOT
upgrading the Yakima County owned White Swan/Toppenish-Yakama Sawmill Railroad line?
Currently, the number of carloads using the line is growing and it needs upgrades to handle the increase.
The End Result
With the 21- mile rail line rehabilitated, cost-effective rail transportation will remain available to handle the increased traffic from different shippers on the line, including the Yakama Nation's two sawmills.
Project Benefits
- Provide access to low cost rail freight transportation for White Swan mills
- Increase safety for freight rail service

Public Involvement
Your thoughts and opinions are important to us. Please contact the WSDOT State Rail Office for more information.
WSDOT is working with port districts, county governments, and rail-dependent shippers to form strong partnerships needed to preserve the rail system.
Environmental Protection
Rail transportation per ton-mile requires less fuel and produces less pollution than other forms of transportation. This translates to significant fuel and pollution savings for farmers and end customers.
Please visit the WSDOT Environmental
Services Web site for more information.
Increasing safety is one of our priorities
Upgrading the 21 miles of track will ensure safe operation for years to come.
Will this project impact tribal resources?
WSDOT will consult with the Yakama Nation on this project.
