Workers pour concrete over rebar on the new State Route 16 bridge over Pearl Street. Once the concrete is dumped, the worker on the right consolidates the material and removes air bubbles with a vibrator.

Workers now spread concrete on the SR 16 bridge over Pearl Street the old-fashioned way, using rakes.

The machinery now finishes the smooth Pearl Street bridge concrete and adds a protective seal. A white dye, seen at right, is added to mark what portions have been treated.

Concrete also goes through a testing process. Ernie Marinig, a WSDOT inspector on the SR 16 Union to Jackson HOV project, loads cylinders to be shipped to the WSDOT Materials Laboratory. The concrete cylinders are retaining wall footing samples for Pier 1 of the SR 16 Center Street flyover ramp. The cylinders will go to the materials lab curing room for 28 days. Once cured, the concrete is broken to test its strength and durability.
