I-5 - Port of Tacoma Road Interchange to King County Line - HOV Lanes - Complete October 2010

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending March 2004

Project Title & Location
I-5 HOV - Port of Tacoma to King County Line

Project Description
This project builds HOV lanes on I-5 from the Port of Tacoma Road to the Pierce/King County line. There are currently eight lanes of traffic and there will be 10 lanes when the project is complete.

Recent Progress

Recent progress includes updating the contract plans to reflect current design standards and revisiting earthwork assumptions to ensure the most efficient methods for moving dirt and reusing suitable materials on-site are outlined in the contract documents.

An engineering consultant has been hired to complete design of the stormwater conveyance and treatment features.  This work focuses on evaluating alternative solutions for stormwater treatment that meet current water quality standards.

Design Construction Impacts

HOV by-pass lanes will be built for the 54th Avenue on-ramps, and as a result, there will impact some wetlands and the Wapato Creek Bridge will need to be widened.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance

A wetland mitigation site will be required for this project.

Innovative stormwater treatment design will be required due to the proximity of Puget Sound.

Impacts to Traffic
This project will add an HOV lane in the northbound and southbound directions of I-5 increasing mobility at this location. Temporary impacts during construction could include narrow lanes along with nighttime lane closures and minor detours at the 54th Avenue Interchange.
