Project Complete - August 2009
- This project and two other chip seal pavers on SR 155 and 243 are combined into one contract called NCR Seal 2009 Stage 2.
- Construction began May 26 and was complete August 6, 2009. Read the news release.
In February 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. WSDOT now stands ready to translate the federal recovery funding into job creation and highway improvements.
Why is WSDOT
chip sealing this highway?
To preserve the roadway and improve the driving surface, a Bituminous Surface Treatment (BST), also known as a chip seal, will be applied. It is a flexible, protective surface of asphalt emulsion and gravel that is applied to existing or repaired pavement.
WSDOT maintenance crews watch for and regularly repair surface roadway damage. Drivers may notice more pavement damage in winter and spring as water, mainly as a result of the freeze/thaw cycle, is the biggest threat to the surface and the underlying roadway base. Once water compromises the roadway, a complete rebuild, as opposed to relatively inexpensive chip sealing, becomes necessary.
The End Result
All 24 miles of this highway was resurfaced. To learn more about the chip-seal process, visit www.wsdot.wa.gov/regions/eastern/chipseal.
