Project Complete - August 2009
- Construction began May 26 and was complete August 6, 2009. Read the news release.
- This project and two other pavers on SR 243 and 262 have been combined into one contract called NCR Seal 2009 Stage 2.
In February 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. WSDOT now stands ready to translate the federal recovery funding into job creation and highway improvements.
Why is WSDOT
paving this portion of the highway?
WSDOT maintenance crews watch for and regularly repair surface roadway damage. Drivers may notice more pavement damage in winter and spring as water, mainly as a result of the freeze/thaw cycle, is the biggest threat to the surface and the underlying roadway base. Once water compromises the roadway, a complete rebuild, as opposed to relatively inexpensive chip sealing, becomes necessary.
The End Result
16 miles of highway was resurfaced. Chip sealing repairs roadway damage and extends the life of the roadway. This treatment improves safety for drivers by creating a highly skid-resistant surface and reducing glare. To learn more about the chip-seal process, visit www.wsdot.wa.gov/regions/eastern/chipseal.
Project Benefits
• Extends roadway life
• Improves safety
• Reduces maintenance costs
• Provides a smoother ride
• Creates local jobs
