November 2009
- Contractor crews completed resurfacing work in October 2009. However, due to inclement weather, crews were unable to complete work on bridge expansion joints. This work will be completed in spring 2010, when more favorable weather conditions exist.
- WSDOT awarded construction of this project in April to Lakeside Industries, Inc. of Lacey, WA. with the winning bid of $5.3 million.
- You can find out where crews are working in Southwest Washington on our Construction Update Web page.
Why is WSDOT
paving this portion of the highway?
The asphalt pavement on this section of I-5 is deteriorating due to age and normal wear. Resurfacing the interstate will repair ruts and cracks in the existing pavement and extend the life of the roadway, in addition to providing a smoother and safer ride for motorists. The project will also strengthen and preserve the road surface, allowing I-5 to continue handling heavy commuter and freight traffic.
In February 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. WSDOT now stands ready to translate the federal recovery funding into job creation and highway improvements, including this roadway preservation project.
The End Result
Drivers will have a safer, smoother driving surface and the roadway will last longer. The project also strengthens the road surface to handle heavier traffic.
Project Benefits
- Safety: Motorist safety and drivability will be enhanced due to a smoother road surface.
- Preservation: The new surface will require less repair work and reduce maintenance costs.
- Jobs: We estimate this project will support approximately 35 jobs in local communities.
What is the project timeline?
WSDOT awarded the construction contract for this project in May. Work began in June and will be completed by spring 2010.
