Why are we Building This Project?
The Yakima River Canyon Center will benefit tourism by enhancing the public profile of the Yakima River Canyon Scenic Byway and offering visitors educational information about the natural and cultural resources of Kittitas County. It is expected to draw at least 1500 people to the site each year and to increase daily traffic on the Scenic Byway by at least 3.4%. The Center will enhance the Yakima River Canyon Scenic Byway by offering an attraction at the northern extent that will give visitors an appreciation of all the other attractions along the road. Further, the economic value of promoting the Scenic Byway will strengthen Kittitas County. We expect that more than 50% of lower Kittitas County’s population will benefit directly (through increased understanding of local ecosystems and improved sanitary conditions at Helen McCabe State Park) or indirectly (through economic value of higher-profile Scenic Byway) from the Yakima River Canyon Center.
