- WSDOT thanks drivers and Issaquah residents for their patience during the girder replacement work.
On the morning of March 13, 2015, an over-height garbage truck collided with the Interstate 90 overpass over Front Street in Issaquah. The collision left a large hole in the overpass and damaged one of the bridge girders.
WSDOT bridge engineers examined the structure and determined that it did not pose a safety risk to drivers, though WSDOT closed the right shoulder of eastbound I-90 on the overpass until repairs are completed.
Starting in May 2016, crews will replace the damaged girder on the overpass.
Why is WSDOT
repairing the I-90 overpass above Front Street?
While WSDOT bridge engineers found the bridge to be safe for traffic, the overpass would eventually deteriorate to a state where it would be unsafe for vehicles to go on or under the bridge. Replacing the 114-foot girder strengthens the overpass and eliminated a visual distraction to drivers in Issaquah.
What can drivers expect?
This work required nightly lane closures and lane shifting on eastbound I-90 as well as lane closures on Front Street.
There were three full overnight closures of Front Street in both directions while workers removed the old girder and set the new girder.
Pedestrians and bicyclists were detoured during the full Front Street closures.
The End Result
A new girder on eastbound I-90 to preserve the safety and integrity of the overpass that carries the interstate over Front Street.
Safety - Replacing the damaged girder restored the overpass to its pre-collision condition and removed a visual distraction for drivers.
What is the project timeline?
November 2015 - The contract was awarded to Massana Construction, Inc.
May 2016 - Construction began.
August 2 - Final restriping on I-90 completed and eastbound traffic restored to normal lanes.
Project signage will reflect the cost of construction engineering, project bid award and sales tax.
