I-90 Two Way Transit - project timeline

Stage 1: Westbound I-90 between Bellevue and Mercer Island
Construction completed in 2008

  • Constructed a new westbound HOV lane between Bellevue Way SE in Bellevue and 80th Avenue SE on Mercer Island.
  • Built westbound I-90 HOV direct access exit at 80th Avenue SE on Mercer Island
  • Modified existing reversible ramp at Bellevue Way SE to a westbound HOV on-ramp and an eastbound HOV exit.

Stage 2: eastbound I-90 between Mercer Island and Bellevue
Construction completed in 2012

  • Added HOV lane to outer roadway 80th Ave. SE to Bellevue Way
  • Modified existing reversible ramp at 80th Ave. SE to an HOV on-ramp to the new eastbound HOV lane
  • Strengthened and preserved existing concrete pavement in both directions between West Mercer Way and Bellevue Way

Stage 3A: I-90 near Bellevue Way and I-405
Construction completed in 2015

  • Reconstructed and repositioned the HOV ramps from eastbound I-90 to Bellevue Way and I-405.

Stage 3: I-90 between Mercer Island and Seattle
Construction completed in 2017

  • Add an HOV lane in each direction of I-90 between 80th Avenue SE on Mercer Island and Rainier Avenue South in Seattle.
  • Strengthen and preserve existing concrete pavement in both directions between I-5 and Lake Washington.
  • Modify existing express lanes exit to Island Crest Way to become an eastbound HOV exit to Island Crest Way on Mercer Island.
  • Upgrade fire and life safety systems in the Mount Baker and Mercer Island tunnels.
