Project Description
This project constructs a new truck climbing/passing lane on Interstate 90 westbound from the Columbia River at Vantage to Ryegrass Summit, to reduce accidents from slower moving vehicles and passing vehicles.

Contractor/Consultant
Superior Paving Co. of Yakima

Recent Progress
This contract was awarded to Superior Paving Co. August 5, 2003.  The anticipated construction cost for this contract is $8,389,096, six percent below the engineer’s estimate of $8,921,376.  Work started on August 25, 2003.

Design Construction Impacts
No impacts to the project’s scope, schedule or budget are known or anticipated at this time.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
All environmental permits for construction have been received and anticipated environmental impacts are mitigated as part of the contract.

Impacts to Traffic

Lane closures are possible Monday through Sunday except on holidays or holiday weekends.  A wide load restriction for westbound loads over 12 ft. wide is in effect from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.  The westbound Ryegrass Rest Area is closed for the month of October and possibly into November 2003, due to construction impacts.  The legal speed limit is reduced from 70 mph to 50 mph 24 hours a day in the westbound lanes, and during hours of work in the eastbound lanes.  Bicycles are detoured to the Old Vantage Highway.  For the 2004 construction season, westbound lanes will be detoured to eastbound lanes with two lanes westbound and one lane eastbound, separated by median barrier.
