I-90 - Ryegrass Summit to Vantage - Complete November 2004

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending December 2003

Project Title & Location

I-90/Ryegrass Summit to Vantage –

West of Vantage

Project Description
This project constructs a new truck climbing/passing lane on Interstate 90 westbound from the Columbia River at Vantage to Ryegrass Summit, to reduce accidents from slower moving vehicles and passing vehicles.

Contractor/Consultant
Superior Paving Co. – Yakima WA

Recent Progress
Work on the truck-climbing lane started on August 25, 2003.  Most construction activities were shutdown for the winter on November 14, 2003. The construction of the additional lane is broken down into three stages.  Stage 1, constructing 0.8 mile of the additional lane at the top of the hill and modifying the rest area ramp, has been completed and is in use.  Work started on the detour that will be used for Stage 2 during the 2004 construction season.

Design Construction Impacts
Because of the area’s climate, work on the project was shutdown November 14 due to snow and cold temperatures.  Work will resume in the spring of 2004 as weather allows.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
All environmental permits for construction have been received and anticipated environmental impacts are mitigated as part of the contract.

Impacts to Traffic

Most construction activities were shutdown for the winter on November 14, 2003, due to snow and cold temperatures.  Some work will continue through the winter, as weather allows.  Lane closures are possible Monday through Friday.  For the 2004 construction season, westbound lanes will be detoured to eastbound lanes with two lanes westbound and one lane eastbound, separated by median barrier.
