I-90 - Highline Canal to Elk Heights - Complete August 2004

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending June 2003

Project Title & Location
I-90/Highline Canal to Elk Heights - East of Cle Elum

Project Description
This project constructs a new truck climbing/passing lane on Interstate 90 eastbound from Highline Canal to Elk Heights, to reduce accidents from slower moving vehicles and passing vehicles.

Contractor/Consultant
Scarsella Brothers, Inc. - Seattle WA

Recent Progress

Scarsella Bros. has completed 90% of the work.  This includes finishing the new concrete pavement for the climbing lane, widening the bridge over Highline Canal, and finishing roadway side slopes.

Design Construction Impacts

After Scarsella Bros. removed the existing shoulder to construct the new climbing lane, a large amount of soft clay was encountered.  The clay had to be replaced with firm dry material for a suitable base for the new truck climbling lane.  This added work will increase the cost of the construction phase by 4%.  Scarsella anticipated completing the project three weeks early, but now will complete the remaining work in the time allowed on the contract.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance

All environmental permits for construction have been received and anticipated environmental impacts are mitigated as part of the contract.

Impacts to Traffic

Lane closures could occur Monday thru Thursday. No lane closures are allowed Friday thru Sunday and holidays.
