Overview
Everyday, over 102,000 cars and trucks drive to and from Issaquah using Interstate 90. The new I-90 Sunset interchange helps commuters today and supports jobs and housing for the future.
The new interchange is part of a system of transportation improvements to keep people moving in and around Issaquah, the Highlands, Pine Lake and Fall City. This includes accommodating new traffic expected from the Port Blakely Communities/Issaquah Highlands project that is developing new commercial, retail and residential real estate within Issaquah's urban growth boundary.
 | Improves Safety
The interchange safety features include: • An updated guardrail and illumination • Improved bike/pedestrian trail that crosses I-90 • A new electronic message sign on eastbound freeway
|
 | Relieves Congestion
Drivers now have a new way to get to Issaquah and the Sammamish Plateau from Interstate 90. The project improves traffic in the Issaquah area by reducing congestion from nearby city and county streets, and taking the burden off crowded I-90 interchanges at Front Street and SR 900.
The project also Installed new traffic cameras to let drivers see conditions before they make their trip.
|
 | Protects Environment
The project added or replaced a series of detention and treatment ponds and wetlands to ensure run-off from the new pavement does not harm the water quality of Issaquah Creek or its tributaries. Work also included improved fish weirs and enhanced fish habitat in the East Fork of Issaquah Creek.
Improvements to Issaquah Creek include: • Added logs to replace broken "walls" where fish can rest and spawn • Re-vegetated stream banks to prevent erosion that can damage fish beds and eggs • Added rocks and woody debris to create shelter for migrating salmon

Partnerships & Cooperation
In the mid 1980s, WSDOT teamed up with the City of Issaquah and King County to identify solutions for congestion problems in the Issaquah area of the I-90 corridor. The I-90 Sunset Interchange project evolved from these efforts.
The Mountains to Sound Greenway provided leadership and assistance in establishing the bike network.
