I-90 - Snoqualmie Pass East - Hyak to Keechelus Dam

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending June 2007

Project Title & Location
I-90 - Snoqualmie Pass East - Hyak to Keechelus Dam

Project Description
This project will improve I-90 to provide a safer, more efficient six-lane freeway from Hyak to Keechelus Dam. This project is the first of several projects that will address concerns along I-90 from Hyak to Easton. Tunnels and/or mitigation measures will minimize avalanche closures and hazards due to rockfall. Aging pavement will be replaced to provide a smoother ride. Expanded bridges and culverts will minimize wildlife collisions by providing safer crossings.

Recent Progress
Design changes resulting from the 2006 Value Engineering Study have been incorporated. A study of retaining wall options along Keechelus Lake has been completed with wall design scheduled to begin this fall. Geotechnical explorations will resume in early summer. Bridge design is underway with preliminary plans started for four bridges near Gold Creek, with Rocky Run Creek to follow. Work on new Right of Way Plans is progressing well. Hydraulic design is ongoing as well as other design studies for various project specialty components.

Design Construction Impacts
Geotechnical exploration and surveying began in late May and will continue through fall.  Short duration lane closures will be required for survey work, limited tree removal, and for exploratory drilling. Rolling slowdowns may be utilized for geophysical surveys along Keechelus Lake.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
It is anticipated that implemention of VE Study recommendations will delay the SAC, BA, Wetland Mitigation and the FEIS. The project should remain on track.  However, an earlier advertisement date may not be possible.

Impacts to Traffic
Occasional short duration lane closures for survey work and tree removal at borehole locations should result in little to no congestion. Limited use of rolling slowdowns for surveys will occur during low traffic volume periods resulting in only minor delays.

Project Milestones Scheduled Attained Milestone Outlook
