WSDOT replaced a 12-foot diameter culvert with a new 40-foot diameter culvert in the east fork of Issaquah Creek. The new culvert allows safe passage and access to spawning grounds for the several species of fish that inhabit the creek.
WSDOT engineers determined the old culvert was a barrier for fish using the creek to get to spawning grounds. The culvert was too high above the creek causing water to move faster than fish could swim. The culvert was also narrower than the streambed was wide. This caused the water to speed up as it moved along the creek towards the culvert.
WSDOT engineers also built concrete supports for two natural gas pipelines that carry fuel from Canada to Utah. The pipelines are near the new culvert. Concrete supports increase safety and better protect the pipelines.
Strong culverts lessen erosion around roads by providing better drainage. Concrete supports improve safety by preventing rapid erosion around pipelines.
