Complete May 2014
Construction started Mar. 21 and was complete May 30.
This P-1, Roadway Preservation project replaced the asphalt driving lanes on I-90 for 11 miles from the Vantage Bridge to a mile west of George. The asphalt was also replaced for the Silica Road Interchange (Exit 143), the Wanapum Scenic View Area (Exit 139 Eastbound), and Echo Scenic View Area (Exit 139 Westbound). Four miles of badly deteriorated asphalt shoulders were replaced just west of George. This project included fog sealing of the driving lanes for the SR 26 interchange (Exit 137) at the east end of the Vantage Bridge.
Why is WSDOT
replace the asphalt on I-90?
The eastbound left lane and both westbound lanes showed signs of distress. Cracks and potholes were forming in the driving lanes and some of the shoulders. We ground off the top layer of asphalt and repaved it.
The End Result
Repaving preserves the underlying asphalt layers and helps prevent more serious damage to the roadway.
- A Smoother driving surface
- Reduced Maintenance Costs
- Preservation of the Roadbed
