I-82 - Granger to W Grandview - WB Dowel Bar Retrofit and Concrete Rehab

Status

Project Complete

Prior to the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, funding for this deteriorated pavement section had not been identified. The ARRA stimulus funding allows WSDOT to address this important project now.

In February 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. WSDOT now stands ready to translate the federal recovery funding into job creation and highway improvements.

Why is WSDOT rehabilitating the roadway?
The existing concrete pavement on I-82 between Granger and West Grandview is developing faulting between panels, resulting in a rough ride and accelerated deterioration, especially in the right or “slow” lane.

The End Result
This project will strengthen the westbound right lane and extend its service life by installing dowel bars in the wheel paths between each concrete panel. The project will also replace severely cracked panels and grind the surface to improve the ride and extend the pavement life. The project will restore signing, striping, and other basic safety features.

Project Benefits

  • Preservation. Restores the structural integrity of the roadway and extends the life of the pavement.
  • Safety. Provides a smoother roadway to enhance driver safety. Restores signing, striping, and other basic safety features.
  • Jobs. We estimate this project will support 105 jobs, which includes jobs on the project, jobs producing materials for the project, and other jobs in the local community.

What is the project timeline?
Project design began in January 2009. Construction started in July 2009.

Financial Information
This project is fully funded by the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Total federal funding - $11.42 million*

*ARRA funds originally committed for this preservation project - $11.4 million Project was awarded May 26 for more than 40% below our engineer's estimate. New total project cost estimated to be $7.2 million, including design and safety improvements that will be advertised in late 2009. $6.9 million of the $7.2 million is ARRA. Once the surplus ARRA funds are de-obligated from this project, WSDOT will use the funds to complete a project on the previously identified Tier 2 list.
