I-5 - Reconstruct Interchange at NE 134th

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending March 2004

Project Title & Location
Reconstruct I-5 Interchange at NE 134th Street

Project Description
Reconstructs the NE 134th Street interchange at the junction of I-5 and I-205. The improvement is needed to maintain safety on I-5 and I-205 and to keep traffic moving at acceptable levels through the interchange area. It includes construction of a supplemental interchange and I-5 crossing at NE 139th Street.

Recent Progress

This project is in the early design phase.  A consultant, Parsons Brinkerhoff, is currently performing a complex traffic analysis based upon different staging and alignment alternatives. Upon review of this analysis, a joint design team consisting of engineers from WSDOT, Clark County and the consultant will continue the design process using the preferred alternative. In November 2002, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) granted approval for modifying the accesses on I-5 and I-205 at NE 134th Street.  In April 2003, FHWA approved a modified interchange concept for this location.  WSDOT received a $40 million funding package from the Washington State Legislature in 2003 for this project.  With this funding, the environmental process and project design can begin, with construction proposed to start in 2011.

Design Construction Impacts
It is too early in the project to determine the magnitude of these impacts.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance

The necessary environmental impact study for this project will detail the project's direct and indirect environmental impacts (natural, ecological, societal and economic) in order to guide final design and construction.  This project may provide an opportunity to improve wetland habitat and storm water runoff in the project area.

Impacts to Traffic
There will be significant impacts to traffic which will be determined as the project develops.
