Budget Information

I-5 - Cowlitz River Bridge to Koontz Rd Vicinity – Paving - Complete Fall 2016

Status

May 2017

  • Construction begins July, 2016
  • We awarded this contract to Lakeside Industries, Inc., of Everett, WA, on Tuesday, May 24, 2016.

In the summer of 2016, WSDOT will repave 10 miles of I-5 in Lewis County between the Cowlitz River Bridge and the Koontz Road overpass.

Concrete panel replacement
Additional work is needed on southbound I-5 near US 12 (exit 68). Several concrete panels underneath the asphalt roadway are broken and need to be replaced. When work begins on this portion of the project, traffic will shift to the east and travel through narrower 11-foot lanes.

Why is WSDOT repaving I-5 from the Koontz Road overpass to the Cowlitz River Bridge in Lewis County?
Wheel ruts, long cracks, and broken asphalt indicate the pavement on this stretch of I-5 is nearing the end of its useful life. This $6.4 million project will help preserve this section of the interstate and provide a smoother surface for drivers.

I-5 is the most significant freight freeway on the West Coast, linking markets in Canada, the United States and Mexico and is critical to the regional, state and national economy.

The End Result
Rehabilitating this stretch of I-5 extends the life of the interstate and preserves an important freight corridor for many years to come.

Project Benefits

  • Preservation – Repaving this section of I-5 will improve the surface of the roadway and extend the life of the highway.
  • Safety – Removing ruts and cracks will produce a smoother highway surface, creating a safer ride for drivers.
  • Economic – Repaving this section of I-5 will reduce the need for costly emergency repairs and maintenance work.
