Crews replaced a total of 41 aging expansion joints on the Interstate 5 Ebey Slough, Union Slough and Steamboat Slough bridges between Everett and Marysville.
Replacing the old and deteriorating bridge expansion joints prevents the risk of the joints unexpectedly popping up into traffic and damaging vehicles.
Deteriorating joints can compromise the integrity of bridges. Replacing the expansion joints on these bridges preserves safety and extends their life.
| Economic Incentive
New expansion joints reduce the need for emergency repairs which are costly and can inconvenience drivers, particularly if lanes need to be closed during peak commute times.
Partnerships & Cooperation
WSDOT coordinated very closely with the cities of Everett, Marysville, Arlington, the Tulalip Tribes, Snohomish County, transit agencies and local businesses to review the project closure plans and maximize public outreach.
