Northbound I-5 weekend lane closures

Friday, April 5 - Monday, April 8

  • Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, April 5 until 5 a.m. Monday, April 8, northbound I-5 will be reduced to just two lanes between South Albro Place and the West Seattle/ S. Columbian Way interchange also known as S. Spokane Street.
  • We need at least 60 percent of drivers (64,000 vehicles) who use this stretch of highway to use alternate routes.
  • The lane closures are needed to replace four aging expansion joints spanning the width of northbound I-5.

  • In addition to closing three out of five lanes, crews also will close the Swift Avenue S. on-ramp to northbound I-5.
  • A signed detour will direct drivers to the Michigan Street on-ramp to northbound I-5.

Alternate routes during the closures

  • We recommend the following alternate routes for drivers traveling into Seattle via northbound I-5:
    • SR 599 to SR 99
    • Northbound I-405 to westbound I-90 to I-5
  • WSDOT will keep the I-90 express lanes open in the westbound direction all weekend to help improve traffic flow. As usual, the express lanes will be open to HOV drivers unless otherwise posted.
  • The I-5 express lanes will run northbound from 1:45 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Plan ahead to avoid significant travel delays

  • If you are already on northbound I-5, the Swift Avenue South off-ramp is the last place you can exit the highway and use an alternate route around the construction closure.
