Recent Progress
Hamilton Construction is currently finishing construction on the new bridge structure for northbound I-5 over Salmon Creek (Bridge 5/22E). The bridge deck has been poured and the wing walls have been completed for the new structure. The cast in place barrier for the new structure will be completed in the near future. Traffic will be shifted onto the bridge as soon as the northbound lanes are constructed and the current stage of the project is completed. Roadway excavation, embankment and drainage operations necessary to widen northbound lanes are currently on hold until the weather allows the work to resume. Construction of a retaining wall on the east side of I-5 is currently underway.

Design Construction Impacts
This project has experienced numerous changes and overruns as a result of unforeseen conditions. These unanticipated changes include; the encountering of underground springs; the relocation of retaining walls due to a natural change that altered the alignment of Tenny Creek; plan revisions to staging, bridge design features, and utilities; and the addition of safety features to assist with traffic operation during construction. Additional construction engineering dollars are necessary because of these changes. It is estimated that an additional $700,000 is needed to complete the project. This is in addition to last quarter’s request submitted for $1.858 million. The total estimated cost to complete construction is $34.7 million.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
WSDOT monitors erosion control and water quality on a daily basis to maintain compliance with the regulatory permits.

Impacts to Traffic
I-5 northbound and southbound have been shifted to the west (southbound onto the temporary detour bridge) to allow for construction of the new northbound structure. The northbound and southbound lanes have been reduced to 11-feet wide. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction during daylight hours.
