I-5 - Widen I-5 Each Direction From Salmon Creek to I-205 - Complete October 2006

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending March 2004

Project Title & Location
I-5 Salmon Creek Widening – Vancouver

Project Description
This project will widen Interstate 5 from milepost 3.64 to milepost 7.49, from two lanes in both directions to three lanes plus an auxiliary lane between NE 99th Street and NE 134th Street. It will construct two parallel bridges on I-5 over Salmon Creek and a new structure for NE 129th Street over I-5 to accommodate the widening.

Contractor/Consultant
Hamilton Construction Company, Springfield, OR

Recent Progress

Hamilton Construction is currently constructing the abutments and curtain walls for the new bridge structure at NE 129th Street. The 8-foot diameter shafts for the new NE 129th Street bridge structure are complete and work will soon begin on several retaining walls, which will raise NE 129th Street to the final bridge elevation.

Hamilton is also constructing retaining walls that are necessary for the final interstate widening and is placing the decking and steel girders for the I-5 temporary detour bridge.

Design Construction Impacts
During structure excavation operations at pier 1 of the NE 129th Street bridge, Hamilton Construction encountered naturally occurring springs that flooded the work area.  Hamilton developed a plan to drive shoring that will keep the area free of water.  Development of the new Legacy Hospital near NE 134th Street will require widening the I-5 northbound off ramp and modifying the signal located at the intersection of the ramp and NE 134th Street to minimize traffic impacts.  The Legacy Hospital developer will pay for the ramp widening and signal modification.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
Erosion control and water quality are monitored on a daily basis to maintain compliance with the regulatory permits.

Impacts to Traffic
The lanes on I-5 southbound have been narrowed to 11’, but two lanes in each direction are maintained during daylight hours. I-5 was closed for the demolition of the NE 129th Street bridge on January 30 at 10:00 pm until February 1 at 12:00 pm.  NE 129th Street was closed on January 30 to allow for construction of the new bridge.  WSDOT reduced the speed limit on I-5 to 50 mph as part of the first traffic shift around the NE 129th St. bridge work.
