Project Title & Location
I-5 Salmon Creek Widening – Vancouver
|
Project Description
This project will widen Interstate 5 from milepost 3.64 to milepost 7.49, from two lanes in both directions to three lanes plus an auxiliary lane between NE 99th Street and NE 134th Street. It will construct two parallel bridges on I-5 over Salmon Creek and a new structure for NE 129th Street over I-5 to accommodate the widening.

Recent Progress
Hamilton Construction is currently constructing three retaining walls required before the final widening can occur. KLB Construction completed the excavation of the stormwater facility and is beginning construction on other retaining walls that are necessary for the final widening.

Design Construction Impacts
During roaday excavation operations, KLB Construction encountered naturally occuring springs at various locations on the western slopes of the project. A plan for an underdrain system to mitigate the water from the springs has been formulated. Development of the new Legacy Hospital near NE 134th Street will require widening the I-5 northbound off ramp and modifying the signal located at the intersection of that off ramp and NE 134th Street to minimize traffic impacts. The costs of the ramp widening and signal modification will be paid by the Legacy Hospital developer.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife allowed an in-water work extension for Tenny Creek which permitted construction of two retaining walls. This means less environmental disturbance in the future. All in-water work in the areas around Tenny Creek was completed prior to the end of the extended in-water work window. Erosion control and water quality are being monitored on a daily basis to maintain compliance with the regulatory permits and agencies.

Impacts to Traffic
The lanes on I-5 southbound have been narrowed to 11’, but two lanes in each direction will be maintained during daylight hours. There will be sporadic nightime single lane closures to allow for worker safety. Additionally, a full weekend closure of I-5 will be used in January for demolition of the NE 129th Street bridge. NE 129th Street will be closed beginning in late January 2004 for approximately five months for reconstruction of the new bridge.
