Project Description

Recent Progress
The first phase, I-5 - Boeing Access Road to King/Snohomish County Line Pavement Repair project was awarded for $ 9.9 million on November 17th. Construction will begin in 2009 and will be complete by the end of the year.

Design Construction Impacts

The remaining funding is scheduled for 2013 thru 2019. Construction cannot start until 2017 which will result in additional pavement failures.  The remaining $ 119 million is not enough funding to complete all the I-5 pavement rehabilitation in King County.  Project phasing will be developed based on pavement condition and coordination with I-5 capacity and Intelligent Highway System projects.

Pavement rehabilitation should be combined with I-5 capacity improvement projects to avoid disturbing I-5 traffic twice in a short period of time.

It is possible that the pavement removable will damage the aged and frail electrical system.  Areas where the pavement rehabilitation project is combined with capacity improvements will require noise  and air analysis.

During the pavement rehabilitation, several lanes of I-5 will be closed for extended periods of time.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
Preliminary analysis indicates that water quality treatment will be required in areas receiving pavement replacement.  Water quantity treatment will most likely not be required through most of I-5 in the downtown Seattle area.

Impacts to Traffic
The pavement rehabilitation should meet the needs of the Puget Sound area for the next 40 years.
