Project Summary
In Dec. 2006, a truck operated by a private company struck and damaged two girders supporting southbound I-5 at Pacific Avenue while trying to maneuver an oversized load under the overpass.
Bridge specialists determined that one of the girders could be permanently repaired. However, the other girder was severely damaged. They made temporary repairs to allow the road to remain open, but determined that the girder needed to be replaced for a permanent fix.
Crews must now tear out and replace the damaged girder. Because it supports the middle of southbound I-5, removing the girder will create a gaping hole in the road. In order to keep drivers and crews safe during this work, crews will build a construction zone in the middle of southbound I-5 that will be more than a mile long.
Detour maps
During the day, southbound I-5 will have three lanes that will split around the construction zone. Crews will also work through the night and will close addition lanes and ramps.
Below are graphics provided to help drivers understand the work we are doing and what to expect when driving through the construction zone. Use the links at the top of the page to jump to a specific map.
