The I-5 Nisqually Road SW / JBLM Mounts Road Gate - Signal project is near completion. This project built turn lanes and installed a traffic signal on Old Nisqually Road at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord Mounts Road Gate.
Why is WSDOT
working with Pierce County on road improvements at the interchange of Nisqually Road SW and the JBLM Mounts Road Gate near Interstate 5?
This intersection project is part of a series of projects being undertaken by WSDOT to reduce congestion on Interstate 5 during peak commute hours.
The End Result
This project provides turn lanes and installed a new traffic signal on Old Nisqually Road at the JBLM Mounts Gate. These improvements allow this gate to be used for outbound traffic from JBLM.
This is one of many projects WSDOT and its regional partners are working on to help reduce traffic congestion along Interstate 5 during peak commute hours. By using this gate, JBLM traffic destined for Yelm or portions of Lacey can avoid using Interstate 5 by using this gate to enter and exit JBLM.
The intersection improvements include:
- Adding a southbound left-turn lane.
- Adding street lighting at the intersection.
- Constructing stormwater treatment and storage facilities.
What is the project timeline?
The contract was advertised on March 6, 2013. In April 2013, Pierce County awarded the contract to Reed Trucking & Excavating. Construction took place from May through Sept. 2013.
The project is expected to be substantially completed in the Spring of 2014.
