Status

April 2014

  • This projected was complete in March, 2014
  • Crews have reopened the northbound State Route 7 ramp to northbound I-705 and the left lane of the northbound I-5 exit to northbound I-705 and Tacoma City Center. Crews were able reopen the ramp four weeks early.
  • Project was awarded May 9, 2013 to Quigg Brothers, Inc.

WSDOT retrofitted I-5 bridges at M Street and along I-705 to meet current earthquake standards.

Crews installed steel jackets on the bridge columns and widened the cross beams to reinforce the bridges. These upgrades improve the integrity and performance of the bridges in the event of an earthquake.

Why is WSDOT strengthening the bridges against earthquakes?
This work is part of WSDOT's aggressive seismic retrofit program with clear goals of minimizing loss of life and disruption of commerce, as well as reducing the risks of complete bridge collapse.

The End Result
The columns supporting the M Street bridge and I-705 overcrossings will better withstand earthquakes and resist damage. Trusses, crossbeams and girders also will be better able to resist damage and make for a stronger bridge. The bridges have been upgraded to current earthquake standards.

This will keep traffic flowing on this key route and protect nearby residences, businesses and traffic from damage if the columns were to crumble or fail during or after an earthquake.

Project Benefits
Stronger columns, crossbeams and girders help the bridge resist earthquake damage.
