I-5 - Mellen Street to Grand Mound

Project Description
This project will widen seven miles of I-5 between Mellen Street in Lewis County and the Grand Mound interchange in Thurston County to increase traffic flow and safety. The project will be constructed in three stages- Stage 1: Blakeslee Junction to Grand Mound, Stage 2: Mellen Street to Blakeslee Junction, and Stage 3: Mellen Street Improvements.

Contractor/Consultant
David Evans and Associates, Inc. is performing the design for Stage 1 and the environmental reports for Stage 2.

Recent Progress
Stage 1: Environmental Discipline Reports and DCE are complete. The project team is finalizing stormwater treatment designs, working toward 60% design review and finishing right-of-way plans.
Stage 2: Preliminary design and environmental work is under way. The project team is gathering data for environmental reports and evaluating various design options.
Stage 3: WSDOT working on design of the interchange ramp improvements and coordinating with the City of Centralia to remove a portion of the old wastewater treatment plant.

Design Construction Impacts
Stage 1: Construction is currently scheduled for 2009. Anticipated construction impacts will be assessed as the design phase is advanced. Close coordination of construction staging is on going with Olympic Region's Grand Mound to Maytown project.
Stage 2: Construction is currently scheduled for 2012. Anticipated construction impacts will be assessed as the design phase is advanced. Constructability is a major element in the design of this complex portion of I-5.
Stage 3: Construction is currently scheduled for 2010. Anticipated construction impacts will be assessed as the design phase is advanced.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
Stage 1: Stormwater treatment for flow control will require off-site mitigation and right-of-way acquisition. Stage 2: Currently working on applicable environmental documentation. Stage 3: Design working on defining the project impacts for environmental mitigation.

Impacts to Traffic
Stage 1, 2, & 3: The design team will generate effective staging plans to minimize construction impacts to the traveling public.
