I-5 Everett Freeway & HOV Expansion Project

Project Description
Constructs northbound and southbound HOV lanes between SR 526 and the vicinity of Marine View Drive. Constructs northbound and southbound auxiliary lanes between 41st Street and SR 2. Replaces the northbound left hand exit to Broadway with northbound and southbound direct HOV access ramps. Constructs a new northbound right hand exit to Broadway for general purpose traffic. Constructs the I-5/41st Street Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI).

Recent Progress

Survey:  Mapping water quality sites, delineating wetlands, layout the Broadway Flyover shaft locations.  Geotechnical:  Continued drilling for boring logs.  Roadway:  Grinding I-5 NB lanes.  Traffic:  Shifting I-5 NB lanes and setting concrete barriers along the median work zone area.  Substructure work:  Setting crane pads to start drilling pier shafts.

Design Construction Impacts

Ongoing project design on roadway and bridge structure widenings, walls, drainage, traffic planning, and utility relocations.  Construction continued on erosion and silt control fencing, temporary lighting, restriping and crane pad preparation for bridge foundation work in the median.  Inside shoulder median work began in the north segment NB and SB as did pavement grinding SB.  Drilling for the foundation of the median pier for the new Broadway Exit Flyover is now scheduled to start in early October and continue with column construction and additional foundations on the NB outside shoulder.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance

The project Environmental Compliance Plan was completed.  Project team obtained noise variance permits for night work activities.  Wetlands were also delineated.

Impacts to Traffic
Lanes will remain open during peak commute hours.  Weekend ramp and nighttime lane closures will be required.

Project Design Completion July 19, 2006 Project team will be adding staff to attain this milestone.
Open New HOV Lane South of Broadway June 13, 2007   Project team will fabricate noise wall panels along I-5 SB lanes.
Open New HOV Lane North of Broadway Dec. 13, 2007  

Project team will advance the design of the structures for this work.
