I-5 / SR 526 to Marine View Drive HOV Lane Design-Build Project

Project Description
Constructs northbound and southbound HOV lanes between SR 526 and the vicinity of Marine View Drive. Constructs northbound and southbound auxiliary lanes between 41st Street and SR 2. Replaces the northbound left hand exit to Broadway with northbound and southbound direct HOV access ramps. Constructs a new northbound right hand exit to Broadway for general purpose traffic. Constructs the I-5/41st Street Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI).

Recent Progress

Survey: Completed the design survey, mapping water quality sites, delineating wetlands, completed layout Broadway Flyover shafts locations.  Geotechnical: Continued drilling for soil boring logs. Roadway: Ongoing grinding  NB I-5. Traffic: Shifting NB I-5 lanes and setting temporary concrete barrier along the median work zone area. Substructure work: Completed the construction of the Broadway Flyover columns and cross beams.

Design Construction Impacts

Design: Ongoing project design for roadway and bridge structure widening, walls, drainage, construction traffic plans and utility relocations. Construction: continued on erosion and silt  control fencing, temporary lighting, restriping and crane pads preparation for bridge work in the median. The median piers for the new Broadway Exit Flyover structure started in early October and all columns and pier caps were completed by end of December. Ongoing NB I-5 pavement grinding and ongoing fabrication of retaining wall panels and noise walls panels.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance

Three non-compliance events exceeded the project water-quality permit requirements in this quarter.  No violations have been assessed due to improved Best Management Practices (BMP's) and increased DB maintenance of the project. 

Impacts to Traffic

Lanes will remain open during daytime commute hours. Weekend ramp and nighttime  lane closures will be required.

Open Broadway Flyover Ramp May 25th, 2006 Ongoing Complete fabricating concrete girders, retaining wall panels and noise wall panels.
Project Design Completion September 28th, 2006  Ongoing Project Team will be adding staff to attain this goal. 
Open New HOV Lane South of Broadway June 13th, 2007  Ongoing Drilling shafts for SB I-5 noise wall, shifting NB I-5 lanes, set concrete barrier for widening work.
Open New HOV Lane North of Broadway December 21st, 2007 Ongoing

Project Team will advance the design for the I-5 structures and begin construction.

Substantial Completion June 29th, 2008 Ongoing Project Team will be adding staff to attain this goal.
