Project Facts
  • Bridge 12/118 will be replaced and will provide vertical clearance that meets current design guidelines.  Bridge 12/117 will be widened. The new bridges will be improved to 5 lanes with sidewalks.
  • On-ramps and off-ramps will be improved.
  • A high accident location (HAL) at the Grand Mound interchange (west side ramp intersection) will be improved by installing a signal at the intersection.

Project Status

May 2008

  • The purpose of this project is to improve the I-5, US 12 interchange at Grand Mound.
  • The project team is currently running operational analysis to validate the planned interchange type.

I-5 - Grand Mound to Maytown Stage One - Add Lanes - Project details

Why is WSDOT Replacing this Interchange?
WSDOT will improve the function and safety of the Grand Mound Interchange by upgrading the freeway on-ramps and off-ramps to meet current WSDOT and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) design guidelines.

The End Result
The interchange configuration will be modified slightly. The existing west side loop ramp will be eliminated. A signal will be installed at the west side ramp intersection to allow traffic that would have used the loop ramp to use the other existing on-ramp to southbound I-5.  On the east side of the interchange, the two existing exits from northbound I-5 will be consolidated to one exit point. Both exit ramps will connect to this consolidated exit-point.

Project Benefits

  • Safety. The project will realign and lengthen on-ramps and off-ramps at the interchange to provide the room required to allow motorists to safely enter and exit the highway.

What is the project timeline?
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2010.

Public Involvement
As the design evolves, WSDOT will keep the public informed and solicit input through communication generated by this website; WSDOT will also attend Rochester Chamber meetings periodically to update the community. This Web site, established in March of 2008, will be updated regularly to reflect current project information.

Environmental Protection
WSDOT is committed to preserving the environment and makes every effort to assess and minimize environmental impacts from our projects. A detailed analysis of the project's environmental impacts will be completed and an appropriate plan for mitigation of adverse impacts will be developed and documented as part of the Environmental Documentation and Environmental Permitting processes.
Please visit the WSDOT Environmental Services Web site for more information.

Increasing safety is one of our priorities

Many of the existing ramps were not designed for a highway with a 70 mph posted speed. Where this is the case, on-ramps will be modified to increase the lengths available for vehicles to accelerate to freeway speed, and off-ramps will be modified to provide more length for vehicles to slow down when exiting the freeway.

At the Grand Mound interchange, the west side ramp terminal intersection is classified as a High Accident Location. Sight distance at the intersection is limited. Signalizing the intersection will eliminate the sight distance problem and increase safety.

Will this project impact tribal resources?

At WSDOT we seek to address the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of The National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.
