I-5 - Chamber Way - Girder Replacement

This project is in the construction phase.

Damage to Chamber Way overpass in Sept. 2012
On Sept. 7, 2012, a too-tall semi-truck struck the Chamber Way bridge over northbound I-5 in Chehalis

Status

March 2014

  • This project was completed on Nov. 15, 2013.

Overview
This project replaces a Chamber Way bridge girder over the northbound lanes of I-5.

Why is WSDOT replacing this girder?
The girder was significantly damaged in September 2012, when it was hit by a semi-truck with a load taller than the legal limit of 14 feet.

The responsible party’s insurance company is paying for girder replacement work.

The End Result
The Chamber Way bridge over I-5 will be fully functional again.

Project Benefits

  • Safety: Maintains the bridge's structural integrity.
  • Preservation: Helps ensure the bridge will continue serving drivers well into the future.
  • Economic: Preserves a vital local transportation link. Chamber Way is a heavily traveled route between I-5 and some of Chehalis’s key industrial and commercial areas.

What is the project timeline?

  • Winter 2012/2013: Preliminary design began
  • Spring 2013: Project advertised to contractors
  • September 2013: Construction began
  • November 2013: Construction complete
