Overview
Completed a third lane between Ohio Street and Lakeway Drive and widened the Lakeway Drive off ramp to two lanes to reduce congestion on Interstate 5 and increase motorist safety.
The third lane allows motorists entering Interstate 5 from the Ohio Street on-ramp to reach full speed before merging with traffic and gives motorists exiting I-5 at the Lakeway Drive off-ramp time and room to exit. A new noise wall helps reduce the impact of noise on the neighborhoods west of Interstate 5 between Ohio Street and Lakeway Drive.
 | Improves Safety
The third lane between Ohio Street and Lakeway Drive on southbound Interstate 5 makes it easier and safer for motorists to get on and off the freeway.
|
 | Relieves Congestion
Widening the southbound Interstate 5 Lakeway Drive off-ramp improved motorists sight distance at the intersection and helps reduce congestion and prevent traffic backups onto I-5.
|
 | Protects Environment
This project built a water runoff retention pond that catches highway water runoff. The pond regulates water flow and helps prevent stream bank erosion in local streams, helping protect our salmon bearing streams.

Partnerships & Cooperation
At WSDOT we seek to address the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of The National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.
Section 106 consultation was initiated with the Nooksack and Lummi Tribes in December 2000. After a delay in the project schedule, consultation was continued in January 2004 when the Cultural Resource Survey produced for this project was sent to the Tribes along with a request for review and comments. The State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) completed her review and concurred with the recommendations of the survey in May 2004.
