We will install three travel time signs at key decision points on Interstate 5. The signs will provide real-time travel information to help drivers decide which route to take to their destinations.
These travel time signs are the latest innovation under WSDOT's Moving Washington program, which uses new tools to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow and manage congestion.
Why is WSDOT
adding three new travel time signs?
We are entering a new era in fighting congestion. New technologies that more evenly distribute traffic and warn drivers of problems down the road are redefining how we manage our highways. At the heart of all this new technology is the ability to adapt to constantly changing highway conditions and respond in the most efficient manner. One of the ways we can do this is through travel time signs.
This project is an important part of the Alaskan Way Viaduct Moving Forward program, which is designed not only to replace the viaduct and seawall but also to manage traffic increases on alternate routes during construction.
The End Result
Three new signs on the I-5 corridor will provide real-time travel times to help drivers make informed choices about their commutes.
Project Benefits
- Reduced congestion: Giving drivers more information about their commutes will help them choose the best route. Our goal is to actively distribute vehicles on I-5, I-90, I-405 and SR-520 to make the available highway system more efficient.
- Improved safety: Improving traffic flow will help reduce the risk of congestion-related collisions.
What is the project timeline?
December 2008 - We awarded the contract to TransTech who submitted the most competitive bid
Spring 2009 - Construction begins
Late 2009 - We expect to complete construction
