Recent Progress
Stage 1: Crews have finished installing all of the noise wall panels for Stage 1 of the project. Additional work includes sealing the gaps between the panels, installing access doors, backfilling the space at the bottom of each panel and applying a tinted sealant to the noise wall to protect it from water damage. After the noise wall work is complete, crews will landscape the highway side of the noise walls, consistent with the existing vegetation. Crews will plant grass on the neighborhood side of the noise wall to control erosion. Construction is currently scheduled to end in spring 2009. The WSDOT team continues to coordinate with neighbors in the form of e-mail, telephone, fliers, and on-site visits to answer questions about the project.
Stage 2: The design team completed 90 percent design for Wall 1-North in January 2009 and is on schedule for the 100 percent submission in April 2009. Wall 1-North will be constructed using a non-concrete product called Carsonite AcoustaShield. The team is continuing to coordinate with Sound Transit to determine scheduling and agreements in recognition of the planned North Link Light Rail line that will be constructed in the same area as the noise wall. The team has also been coordinating with Seattle Public Utilities, the Seattle Department of Transportation, and Seattle City Light to address parking, maintenance, graffiti, landscaping, and utilities for the noise wall. Construction of Wall 1-North is scheduled to begin in summer/fall 2009.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
The project's resultant noise reduction is beneficial to the surrounding environment and communities.
During construction the contractor will install erosion control measures to contain sediment and debris at the construction site.
Street use permits and noise variances for night time work have been obtained from the City of Seattle for Stage 1. Night work is not anticipated for Stage 2, but street use permits will be required.

Impacts to Traffic
Stage 1 work involves temporary modifications to off-ramps and possible lane restriction on I-5 during night work.
