Stage 2 (Wall 1 on the east side of I-5)
In July 2008, WSDOT facilitated a community poll with property owners who were eligible to participate. Separate polls were conducted for Wall 1-North and Wall 1-South.
The polling period ended on July 17, 2008. The project team has processed the ballots and the results for each wall segment are shown below. The community poll is one of many sources of input that WSDOT receives before continuing with design and construction of the proposed noise wall on the east side of I-5.
Wall 1-North: between NE 92nd Street and NE 85th Street
- We received ballots from 62 percent of eligible property owners.
- 88 percent of the weighted total indicates support for Wall 1-North.
The results of the community poll, along with other feedback we’ve received from Wall 1-North neighbors, signify strong support for the wall. As a result, the project team will continue to design Wall 1-North, and plan to begin construction in summer/fall 2009.
Wall 1-South: between NE 85th Street and NE 80th Street
- We received ballots from 75 percent of eligible property owners.
- 41 percent of the weighted total indicates support for Wall 1-South.
- Among returned ballots from property owners living closest to the proposed noise wall, 75 percent opposed the further design and construction of Wall 1-South.
The results of the community poll, along with other feedback we’ve received from Wall 1-South neighbors, do not signify support for the wall. As a result, WSDOT has decided to remove Wall 1-South from the project.
Stage 1 (Walls 2, 3, & 4 on the west side of I-5)
In June 2007 we sent polls to property owners behind noise walls 2, 3 and 4 (Stage 1) that were within 500 feet of the edge of the traveled lane of I-5. Below are the final results of the polls and the percentage of eligible voters who returned ballots. This poll helped us determine community support for the noise walls.
Wall 2: between N 85th Street and NE 92nd Street on the west side of I-5
- We received ballots from 57 percent of eligible voters behind wall 2.
- 95 percent of the weighted total support construction of the noise wall.
Wall 3: between N 82nd Street and N 80th Street on the west side of I-5
- We received ballots from 68 percent of eligible voters behind wall 3.
- 94 percent of the weighted total support construction of the noise wall.
Wall 4: between N 80th Street and 5th Ave NE on the west side of I-5
- We received ballots from 56 percent of eligible voters behind wall 4.
- 95 percent of the weighted total support construction of the noise wall.
