May 26, 1999 - Overheight trucks we're hitting the 2nd Street Bridge as they passed underneath. Trucks were damaging the bridge, knocking concrete off and ripping steel bars apart.

In an effort to protect the bridge from overheight trucks, we placed a protective steel case around the bridge girder. You can see from the picture that the steel plate was obsorbing the the blows, but was still being ripped open.

The bridge height clearance was 14'4". Trucks still hit the bridge despite numerous height restriction / warning signs several miles before the bridge.
