Overview
The 2nd Street Bridge in Mount Vernon crosses over State Route 536, the Burlington Northern Railroad and Interstate 5. The original bridge was built in 1928 and lengthened in 1953. It was the lowest clearance bridge over Interstate 5 between Canada and Mexico. We demolished the original bridge and replaced it with a new wider, taller bridge that increases safety and relieves congestion.

How You Benefit
Cross GlyphImproves Safety
The new bridge has a higher clearance level, removing the risk of collisions with tall trucks.
Car GlyphRelieves Congestion
The bridge forced taller trucks to detour off the highway and onto city streets, thus slowing freight mobility and congesting city streets.  The new bridge has three 12-foot wide vehicle lanes (two northbound and one southbound), bicycle lanes and sidewalks on both sides of the bridge. The additional northbound lane provides a slow moving vehicle lane for trucks and buses moving through the city of Mt. Vernon.

Partnerships & Cooperation
WSDOT partnered with the city of Mount Vernon to build a third lane on the new bridge. A three-lane bridge ties into the city's long range traffic plans. In agreement for building the third lane, Mount Vernon will treat all water runoff and paid for the installation of new utilities on the bridge.
