I-5/Second Street Bridge - Replace Bridge - Mount Vernon

Project Description
This project replaces a low-clearance bridge over I-5, eliminating a through-city detour now required for over-height trucks. The new bridge eliminates the risk of over-height trucks hitting the bridge over busy I-5 and will meet seismic standards.

Project not yet advertised or awarded.

Recent Progress

A project presentation was held in March to give the local businesses, emergency services, and local agencies a project up date and to provide a forum for questions and answers.  Currently our contract plans are in the last week of review with a turn in date of April 19.

Design Construction Impacts

The City of Mount Vernon is reviewing our request for construction easements, noise variance, and participation agreement.  The City is expected to sign these request without impacts to the scheduled advertisement date.  Regional Real Estate Services continuing to work with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad to purchase right-of-way and obtain construction easements.  Real Estate Services expects the Railroad to sign without impacts to the schedule advertisement date.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
No significant impacts.  Agreement with the City of Mount Vernon to treat water from new bridge.

Impacts to Traffic
Traffic will be detoured through Mount Vernon at night when full directional closure of I-5 is required.   Mitigation efforts include a comprehensive public awareness campaign.

Utility Conflicts Resolved July 2003  March 04 Issue remains on location of bridge drainage tie into City combined storm water system.
Retaining Walls Designed December 2003 December 03 Retaining wall plans are 90% complete.  Will have to change location of wall to accommodate keeping two lanes open each direction of I-5.
Property Purchases Begins January 2004 Real estate services in negotiations-- will meet scheduled date.
Contract Advertised April 2004 Ad date may be delayed due to acquisition of Railroad right of way.
