I-5 - 2nd Street Bridge Replacement - Complete September 2006

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending June 2006

Project Title & Location
I-5/Second Street Bridge - Replace Bridge - Mount Vernon

Project Description
This project replaces a low-clearance bridge over I-5, eliminating a through-city detour now required for over-height trucks. The new bridge eliminates the risk of over-height trucks hitting the bridge over busy I-5 and will meet seismic standards.

Contractor/Consultant
Project was awarded to Mowat Construction on June 1 for 2% over engineers estimate.

Recent Progress

Work resumed on June 10 with reconstructing the slow lane shoulders of I-5 under 2nd street bridge in preperation for lane shifts.  Work in August will include paving of south bound lanes to bring the pavement even with the north bound lanes, removing the old cast in place barrier between north and south bound lanes and placing it with new pre-cast barrirer. Contrcat work is 95% complete with the project scheduled to be complete in September.

Design Construction Impacts

Work to remove and replace the cast-in-place barrier and paving of southbound I-5 in the vicinity of the new bridge will begin in August. This work  will require a lane closure of northbound and southbound I-5 at night and full total directional (north or south bound lanes) closures of I-5 . This work will also include drainage improvements and reconstruction of the northbound I-5 right shoulder .

Environmental Impacts / Compliance

Ther will be adherence to permit requirements..

Impacts to Traffic
Traffic will be detoured through Mount Vernon at night when full directional closure of I-5 is required (Contractor has used 11 of the 23, I-5 closures allowed in the contract).   Mitigation efforts include a comprehensive public awareness campaign. The next I-5 closures will occur this spring to remove and replace median barrier, construct new drainage, and pave south bound I-5 in the vicinity of the new bridge.
