I-5 - 2nd Street Bridge Replacement - Complete September 2006

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending December 2005

Project Title & Location
I-5/Second Street Bridge - Replace Bridge - Mount Vernon

Project Description
This project replaces a low-clearance bridge over I-5, eliminating a through-city detour now required for over-height trucks. The new bridge eliminates the risk of over-height trucks hitting the bridge over busy I-5 and will meet seismic standards.

Contractor/Consultant
Project was awarded to Mowat Construction on June 1 for 2% over engineers estimate.

Recent Progress

Tuesday October 18, 2005 we opened the new 2nd street bridge to traffic.  Bridge items to be completed include pedestrian rail and throw fence.  SR536 work completed includes first lift of asphalt, drainage, and curb and sidewalk. The remaining work on SR536 includes final lift of asphalt and striping, this work will be completed this spring.  The parking lot in front of the county building is graded and will be paved this month.

Design Construction Impacts

Work to reconstruct the slopes on the east side of I-5 under span 6 will require a right lane closure of north bound I-5 at night. This work will include drainage improvements slope grading and permanent slope erosion protection.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance

The City of Mount Vernon discovered buried fuel tank on County R/W in a parking lot that was being overlaid as part of this project. The cost associated with addressing the tank issue are being determined.

Impacts to Traffic
Traffic will be detoured through Mount Vernon at night when full directional closure of I-5 is required (Contractor has used 11 of the 23, I-5 closures allowed in the contract).   Mitigation efforts include a comprehensive public awareness campaign. The next I-5 closures will occur this spring to remove and replace median barrier, construct new drainage, and pave south bound I-5 in the vicinity of the new bridge.
